Ensuring Transportation Infrastructure and System Resilience

This course explores the challenges and strategies associated with enhancing the resilience of the U.S. transportation infrastructure to climate variability and extreme weather events. Developed in response to federal mandates and executive orders, the content presents a comprehensive overview of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s adaptation framework, highlighting vulnerabilities in existing and new infrastructure, and the importance of system-level resilience. Engineers will examine case studies, policy statements, and adaptation actions undertaken by various modal administrations, including the FAA, FHWA, FTA, FRA, and others.

The course emphasizes the integration of climate adaptation into planning, asset management, and operational procedures across transportation systems. Topics include projected climate impacts such as sea level rise, increased precipitation intensity, and extreme heat, along with their effects on roadways, bridges, rail systems, airfields, and maritime infrastructure.

Learning Objectives

This course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Identify key climate-related vulnerabilities affecting existing and planned transportation infrastructure.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of DOT modal administrations in advancing climate adaptation.
  • Apply concepts of system resilience to prioritize and protect critical transportation assets.
  • Incorporate climate considerations into transportation planning, asset management, and decision-making processes.
  • Evaluate federal tools, policies, and case studies that support climate-resilient infrastructure development.
